BRIGHTON DIGITAL FESTIVAL, 2012

A MONTH-LONG CELEBRATION OF DIGITAL CULTURE

Lighthouse was delighted to take part in Brighton Digital Festival 2012, a whole month of exhibitions, performances, meet-ups, workshops and outdoor events that run alongside Brighton’s iconic digital design conferences.

Brighton Digital Festival builds bridges between Brighton’s thriving digital creative industries and Brighton’s equally vibrant arts community. It includes events organised by a diverse range of designers, tech companies, community groups, arts organisations and individuals who are passionate about Brighton’s digital culture.

The festival returned in 2012 and after the successes of its previous year, which Lighthouse was at the heart of, we think we have something special going on.

The festival officially launched with a stunning outdoor interactive performance by local artist and creative coder extraordinaire, Seb Lee-Delisle. Brighton Digital Festival featured no less than 5 major conferences, exploring different aspects of digital culture.

Our own was Improving Reality 2012, an inspiring day of talks that explored how artists and designers are shifting our perceptions of the world. Major names in digital culture, Warren Ellis and Anab Jain, joined artists Luke Jerram and Usman Haque, renowned curator and blogger, Regine Debatty, technologist Leila Johnston and many others that survey the frontiers of reality.

We were delighted to present Odysseys an exhibition by David Blandy, curated by Lighthouse and presented in partnership with Phoenix Brighton. To complement the exhibition we showcased a varied programme of workshops and talks, including Artist Talk with David Blandy, a specially selected Anime Film Screening, a Comic Book Workshop, and an all day Fated Duel Gaming Tournament.

A major part of our work for the festival is an education programme which inspires young people to creatively experiment with technology. Our Happenstance creative technologist, Natalia Buckley, artist David Blandy, and illustrator Inko, headed into three Brighton schools to lead workshops with the artists and coders of tomorrow. Alongside the schools programme were a cluster of workshops, seminars, and talks.

Brighton Digital Festival is a celebration of digital culture. It is run by members of Brighton’s arts and digital communities, administered by Wired Sussex in association with Lighthouse and supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
