Lighthouse presents The Space in Sound: a day of talks and an evening performance exploring ways sound can occupy space.
The event offers an opportunity to discover ways in which sound appears in its physical, psychological, compositional, digital, electronic and analogue forms. Themes will interrogate spatial sound, architecture, objects, experimentation and how it can play, interact and synergise between individuals, communities and the environment.
This is an event for sound practitioners, artists, musicians, architects, students and anyone with an interest in the creative possibilities of sound.

The Space in Sound is inspired by the former Lighthouse programme The Sound of Story, an exploration of sound, music and storytelling, that ran 2014-16.
Symposium: Multiplicity of Listening
Talks: 1pm – 5pm

An afternoon of talks exploring different ways of thinking about how we listen to sound, and cultural attitudes towards the act of listening. We will interrogate our understanding of sound in space- how it can be detected through our ears, but can also be felt, seen and experienced as an idea. Themes will include spatial sound, architecture, machines, experimentation and how it can play, interact and synergise individuals, communities and the environment.
Speakers include Haroon Mirza, Rie Nakajima, Paul Davies, Kersten Glandien and Lucy Harrison, more to be announced.

A series of performances by artists using the Pentacle 15:3 sound system. A powerful high fidelity mobile speaker system, developed by Fedde ten Berge and consisting of 15 self-designed loudspeakers and 3 self-designed subwoofers, all purpose built.
This is a unique opportunity to sit within this 360º sonic scape and experience some of the most exciting and innovative electronic musicians working today.
About the speakers
Lucy Harrison is a composer and sound designer. Her work focuses on interactive sound, using technology and electronics to create immersive soundscapes and interactive installations, and scores for film and theatre. She has PhD in composition from Royal Holloway, where she investigated interactive sound and music and audience engagement. Lucy is a lecturer on the Production and Games Academy courses at ACM (Academy for Contemporary Music) in London and Guildford where she teaches sound design, interactive audio and performance and technology. This talk will present the ways in which sound can be used in real and imagined spaces to guide interactive narratives.
With a background in electronic music, Paul Davies graduated from the sound course of the National Film and Television School in 1993. After working as a sound recordist, sound editor and dubbing mixer on a variety of feature, broadcast and corporate work, Paul was employed as a sound editor at Videosonics in Camden. In 2000, Paul became a freelance supervising sound editor and sound designer and in 2003 he established his own sound post-production company, PDsoundDesign.
Paul is best known for his long-time collaboration with director Lynne Ramsay, having created the tracks for Ratcatcher, Morvern Callar, We Need to Talk About Kevin and You Were Never Really Here. His other credits include Steve McQueens’s Hunger, John Maybury’s Love is the Devil and Stephen Frear’s The Queen.
Rie Nakajima is a Japanese artist working with installations and performances that produce sound. Her works are most often composed in direct response to unique architectural spaces using a combination of kinetic devices and found objects. Fusing sculpture and sound, her artistic practice is open to chance and the influence of others, raising important questions about the definition of art. She has exhibited and performed worldwide.
Sound artist working at the intersections of fine art and electronic music, he structures the unglamorous beeps and buzzes of antiquated audio technology into beats and melodies, synchronizing these sounds with lights and moving pieces. Part music, part sculpture, part architectural intervention, Mirza “remixes” not just sounds but the spaces they inhabit. At The Space in Sound, he will be discussing sound for ritual and celebration in relation to his epic collaboration with Lighthouse – ‘The Wave Epoch’.
Haroon Mirza is represented by Lisson Gallery, and won The Silver Lion for Most Promising Artist at 54th Venice Biennale.
Kersten Glandien is an author, scholar and curator specializing in the fields of SoundArts, Aesthetics and Experimental Music. Fluent in a range of musical genres, Glandien is famous for bringing British & German composers together for unconventional performances. In her talk, Glandien will examine the ways sound installed in public locations can influence our perception and make us aware of interactions with space.

About the Performers
Lee Gamble is an artist, producer, label owner and DJ of exploratory electronic/dance music. Over the last several years Lee has released a string of critically acclaimed albums and EP’s on seminal electronic music labels PAN and Hyperdub, he has also founded his own UIQ imprint in late 2015. Lee’s work combines the sculptural sound objects of Musique Concrète and the ever mutating dancefloor mechanics of the Hardcore Continuum.
At The Space in Sound, Lee Gamble will present a spatialized version of ‘In a Paraventral Scale’, an ambisonic work that debuted at Elevate festival in 2019. Here he reimagines it for the 15:3 Pentacle soundsystem.
‘In a Paraventral Scale’ is the first EP in a trilogy of records that form the album Flush Real Pharynx, released on Hyperdub. It zooms in on the seductive/destructive nature of present-day reality through a symbolic prism inhabited by snakes, vehicles, and mirages. Gamble exposes us to a new type of digital theatre, a unique and futuristic filmic world blurring the distinction between non-musical sound, music, and dancefloor, a push and pull between reality and fictional worlds.
Ji Youn Kang
Ji Youn Kang (1977, KR) is a composer and sound artist. She moved to the Netherlands in 2016 and achieved her master’s degree both in Sonology and in Composition at Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Most of her music pieces have been composed based on the rites of Korean Shamanism, and many of them were written for Wave Field Synthesis System (192loudspeakers) playback, exploring the relationship between musical and physical spaces. At the same time, she has been composing live electronic pieces for both traditional and non-traditional instruments, ranging from a solo instrument to a large orchestra, exploring mostly the primitive, empowering rhythmical elements and the noisy sound sources that the Korean ritual music involves. She is also active as a solo performer mainly seeking ways to combine three different sound areas on stage; acoustic instruments, analog and digital sound with handmade analog synthesizers with live processing on a laptop. Currently, she is working as a freelance composer and is teaching at the Institute of Sonology in The Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.
Nina Pixel is a conceptual storyteller, techno poet, deconstructor of ‘the obvious’ and sound artist crossing the border of ritual rhythms looped in endless narcotic soundscapes and dystopic techno journey into the noise rites and industrial fairytales.
Nina will be performing ‘Bias Loop’, a sonic poem about reconnecting with the self. The work was developed specifically for The Pentacle sound system.
Hugo Esquinca’s research as intervention/intervention as research in sound explores mixed degrees of exposure to thresholds of indeterminacy, spectral degradation, erratic processing techniques and excessive levels of amplification. Deformation Studies on Dimension and Structure for Fifteen Point Three is a mediation between the potential of localisation through audio within the Pentacle system, the programming of each modulations of sound according to this capacity, and the acoustic resonances of The Old Market venue.
Fedde Ten Berge
Fedde ten Berge is an Amsterdam-based sound artist, builder of interactive sound installations, performer and composer of electronic music. He works as the artistic coordinator at STEIM in Amsterdam where he manages his workshop for electronics, wood and metal processing and organises exhibitions. Together with Jesse Meijer, Fedde developed a 15.3 loudspeaker surround sound system, the Pentacle, for which several artists were commissioned to create sound pieces.
“During the summer of 2017 at the Dutch island Schiermonnikoog, I doodled a generative algorithm for pseudo random pulse patterns. I was hooked on it for a few days but then the wind came, I took my kite and forgot about it. In the fall of 2017, Ifinished the Pentacle 15.3 surround system and started working on a live performance. I remembered the pseudo random pulse algorithm and became fascinated by the syncopated patterns that arose. I added generative chord sequences and interwoven them with the pulse patterns. I programmed resonant models for the generation of melodic structures. When I applied the resonances,some unexpected melodies arose; a new, more musical performance arose. I attached midi-controllers and a joystick to make it all more playable and started rehearsing. During my explorations into the material, I made certain decisions for moments that are more or less composed. Because of the pseudo randomness of the pulses there is a constant suggestion of drive that is not really there. I am fighting with the instability. A pseudo random pulse fight you could say. The Space in Sound is part of Re-Imagine Europe, which is co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union. Re-Imagine Europe is initiated by Sonic Acts (NL) and coordinated by Paradiso (NL) in collaboration with Elevate Festival (AT), Lighthouse (UK), Ina GRM (FR), Landmark / Bergen Kunsthall (NO), A4 (SK), Disruption Network Lab (DE), Ràdio Web MACBA (ES), Urban Paradoxes (NL) and Kontejner (HR). Lee Gamble’s performance of In a Paraventral Scale was originally commissioned by Elevate Festival. Nina Pixel, Hugo Esquinca and Ji Youn Kang’s performances on the Pentacle system were originally commissioned by Sonic Acts and A4.
