Open Session #23: Home with Ramzia Jawara

Join British-Gambian artist and filmmaker Ramzia Jawara for an evening of film and conversation about healing, heritage and the spiritual threads that run between generations.

Ramzia Jawara is an artistic medium and interdisciplinary Artist whose work lies at the intersection of identity, race, gender and sexuality through her subjective experience in the black female body. Much of her works explore the taboo corners of the human experience with a particular interest in spiritual technologies for evolution within the landscape of African futures. Her practice is an evolving exploration into self and understanding as she situates lost fragments of identity into form.

Earth is My Masjid, a 10-minute performance film set in The Gambia, follows Jawara's own journey of self-healing after experiencing a near death experience, as she returns to nature, the elements and movement to reclaim her mind and heart.

ABOUT FUTURE CREATIVE LEADERS

Future Creative Leaders (FCL) is a 12-month paid programme offering young creatives from underrepresented backgrounds the opportunity to work closely with Lighthouse's leadership team to explore various aspects of creative leadership.

FCL redefines youth engagement by sharing power and resources directly with young people. This 12-month programme goes beyond access or participation. It places real influence, leadership, creative agency and decision-making power in the hands of those traditionally underrepresented in the creative industries.

Over the year, participants will co-curate programmes, select participants for mini-residencies, and recruit their successors, all while exploring alternative governance structures, accountability, and power-sharing.
