Light+ Alternate Realities

The Light+ podcasts introduce extra voices, opinions and perspectives to enable deeper understanding and exploration of our programme. The second season of Light+ features conversations with the artists and curators behind Alternate Realities, selected works touring from Sheffield Doc/Fest, presented at Lighthouse in September 2018 as part of Brighton Digital Festival. Exploring the themes of borders, identity, and loss, the works each show how immersive and interactive technologies enable us to interpret and engage with socio-political infrastructures, storytelling and the interface of physical and digital worlds.

Episode 1

In episode 1, Lighthouse CEO & Artistic Director Alli Beddoes talks to artist Ifeatu Nnaobi, creator of Where is Home? This Instagram-based project reveals a complex range of thought-provoking answers and interrogates people’s understanding and experiences of a fundamental concept that’s often taken for granted.

Episode 2

In episode 2, Lighthouse Senior Producer Sian Habell-Aili talks to artist Asad J. Malik, creator of Terminal 3. The interactive augmented reality piece explores contemporary Muslim identities in the U.S. through the lens of an airport interrogation. The viewer is asked to step into the uncanny to directly interrogate, and determine the fate of, the hologram passenger before them.

Episode 3

In episode 3, Lighthouse CEO & Artistic Director Alli Beddoes talks to John-Paul Marin from SBS Creative Digital Labs, the team behind Belongings. The interactive installation piece asks: what if you had to flee your homeland forever? What’s the one item you couldn’t live without? The subjects of this immersive installation were faced with that very decision.

Episode 4

In episode 4 we hear from Dan Hett, creator of The Loss Levels, a deeply personal yet playful collection of fifteen experimental narrative arcade games that narrate the artist’s experience in 2017 when he lost his brother in the Manchester Arena terror attack. This episode was recorded live and features Dan is conversation with Joe Cutts from Sheffield Doc/Fest.

Episode 5

In the final episode of this series Lighthouse CEO & Artistic Director Alli Beddoes talks to Dan Tucker, Curator of Sheffield Doc/Fest’s Alternate Realities exhibition and tour. Alli and Dan discuss the selection of work exhibited at Lighthouse, the role of the curator and working with artists using emerging technologies.
