Cineville is pleased to welcome Screen South and the Institute of Development Studies’ Pathways of Women’s Empowerment for the launch of their 2009 Real World documentary programme.
A call-out for submissions will be announced for the production of a £20,000 documentary short. The films produced during the last round will also be screened, followed by Q&As with the films’ directors.
Real World aims to find innovative filmmakers from the Screen South region to make a 12 minute documentary film based on one of the Institute’s international research projects.
The programme was launched in November 2007 and has so far commissioned two filmmakers to shoot films in Brazil and Palestine.
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////A Vida Politica
Directed by Kat Mansoor, ‘
A Vida Politica’ is a series of creative films exploring the activism of four Brazilian women, as they demonstrate innovative ways of bringing hidden issues into the public domain:
Body – Jane gets ready for a fashion shoot for Daspu, Brazil’s ironic and intelligent fashion label run by prostitutes.
Voice – Creuza, Head of the Domestic Workers Association in Brazil, has no money, no status; no ability to buy votes - only her voice. This short documents one of Creuza’s political speeches in several places.
Art – The reality for women in Brazil (especially those that are poor and black) is that having an abortion is illegal and dangerous. This film captures the endeavours of a street artist dressed as a clown who wants to teach people through simple set art pieces about the dangers.
Image - Set within a hairdresser’s in Salvador - observing the way that black women use their hair as a vehicle for wider political activism.
Kat Mansoor
Kat Mansoor is co-director of independent production company Animal Monday, which produces engaging, original films and documentaries for television networks and community interests. To date, Kat has produced and directed several broadcast documentaries, including ‘Retrograde’, ‘Israeli-Pakistani Relations’ and most recently ‘Here's Johnny’, which won an unprecedented two Grierson awards for Best Arts Documentary and Best Newcomer, and was screened on More4 in March 2009.
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////Thorns and Silk
Directed by Paulina Tervo, ‘
Thorns and Silk’ tells four unusual stories from Palestine, featuring women who work in jobs that are conventionally associated with men. All four of them have the courage to break traditional rules, though not without challenges.
Hanan is a wedding filmmaker in the conservative town of Hebron - a fascinating peek into the hidden lives of women in Islam and their freedom within the rules set by their society.
Majda is the only Palestinian female taxi driver in Jerusalem. She wears a Jewish headscarf as her work uniform, as it’s the only way for her to work there.
Niveen is a dreamy, young woman training to be a police officer at the Palestinian national police academy in the desert town of Jericho. In a country where women are still rarely working outside the house, she finds it hard to meet men who are open-minded enough to accept her masculine job.
Yusra lives with her elderly husband and young son in a rural village outside of Nablus, a city severely restricted by the occupation. At a small toilet paper factory it’s her job to fix the heavy machinery, oversee the production as well as deliver the goods all over the West Bank.
Paulina Tervo
Paulina Tervo is a documentary filmmaker with a passion for development, human rights and women’s empowerment. She is particularly keen to tell positive stories from developing countries and conflict zones. As well as making films, she works for several charities and teaches filmmaking.
