Brussels meets Brighton: The Meta-Hub

Between 30th April and the 3rd of May London's exciting Shunt Lounge will host a massive exhibition involving Arts Collectives from Brighton, Brussels and London. The event will incoporate a feast of fascinating performance including: live music, puppetry, dance and physical theatre, video and sound installations, photography, slam poetry, scientists, robotics and more.
The themes for the show are: meta-communication, real-time improvisation and inter-cultural understanding. The exploration of these themes will be facilitated by the Meta-Hub.
The Meta-Hub is a computerised Audio-Visual pool operated by 11 Vj's, Dj's and Hackers through which all audio and visual feeds from the entire exhibition pass; all participant artists may then take any data-stream to use as they please. The Shunt Lounge is an incredible labyrinth of caves and arches underneath London Bridge station which serves as an artistic playground, a concert venue and a gallery.
Parts of the event will also be broadcast on a variety of radio stations, both internet based and fm based. In addition to this, galleries around the world, including in Sydney, Austin and Brussels, will be screening some of the feeds from the Meta-Hub.
The Prelaunch of “Brussels Meets Brighton”
Thursday 27 March
At: The Basement, 24 Kensington Street, Brighton BN1 4AJ
The prelaunch for the event ‘Brussels meets Brighton: the Meta-Hub’ was held at The Basement on Thursday 27th March 2008. The event was a scaled down version of the London show, demonstrating the main concepts behind the exhibition. Including artists talks, live music, live art, live video mixing and a mini version of the Meta-Hub:
- The music performance took the form of an improvised set, with live musicians playing in the Basement simultaneously with the band Elphemerrances in Brussels, linked via a high-speed internet connection.
- The live-art performance involved audience participation and artists on the street linked with wireless cameras to the mini meta-hub.
- The mini Meta-Hub involved several operators (VJs, Sonic Artists, Hackers). They mixed live all the visual feeds, and projected on to screens and tv sets around the Basement.
- The talks introduced the main concepts and players behind ‘Brussels meets Brighton: the Meta-Hub’
- Radio Reverb broadcasted in real time the evening’s events from 9pm on air (97.2FM) and online at www.radioreverb.com.
An open call to artists was made to collaborate on the pre-launch event, seven artitsts were invited to take part.
Giving an exciting opportunity to play a part in an experimental interdisciplinary performance, and to make new links with a variety of cutting edge Brighton-based artists.
The curators of the show, Platform Centrale, have a whole series of interesting and experimental shows lined up over the next couple of years, and are constantly looking to expand their database of participant artists.
The participating artists will be:
