Selected to speak at the CAT (Computer and Art Technocultures) Symposia in London in February 2010, acclaimed digital artist and academic, Bonnie Mitchell has included Lighthouse in her visit to the UK. Join us for this great opportunity to see and hear about her artistic production and creation of art environments that explore the concept of virtual presence and unencumbered immersion through her use of interactive media and experimental animation.
Over the past twenty years Mitchell has developed numerous interactive installations including Virtual Presence (1992), which used a Polaroid sonar sensor to measure the distance of a viewer to the installation, creating a pseudo-dialog between human and machine. Her recent installation Inhabitants immersed the viewer in an abstract world populated with organic entities. Through the use of small handheld projection screens, the viewer caught animated elements projected from the ceiling to the floor to decipher the meaning of the piece. Many of Mitchell’s installations explored the sculptural capabilities of light to form 3 dimensional spaces using abstract animation, sensors, projections, and computer programming. The installations often employed elements such as semitransparent scrims, mirrors, hundreds of fluorescent light bulbs and thousands of strands of yarn.
Mitchell’s artworks have been exhibited internationally at SIGGRAPH, SEAMUS, ICMA, ISEA, Prix Ars Electronica, Digital Salon, ArCADE, Gamut, and many other venues. In 2006, Ms Mitchell chaired the SIGGRAPH Art Gallery - Intersections, the Electronically Mediated Performances and the retrospective exhibition, Beyond Boundaries: Charles Csuri from 1963 to present. She also chaired the GRAPHITE 2006 Art and Animation Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; GRAPHITE 2007 Digital Art exhibition in Perth, Australia; and the New York State Media Festival in 1995. Mitchell presents her research internationally and has been keynote speaker, panel chair, and speaker at numerous conferences and symposia. Bonnie Mitchell currently is an Associate Professor of Digital Arts in the School of Art at Bowling Green State University, USA. She teaches digital and experimental animation, and interactive media.
