Unfamiliar countries, impossible structures / AURORA
Tuesday 03 June 08
Lighthouse, 28 Kensington Street, Brighton

Complex mathematical structures to organic interiors, dream-landscapes to visual riddles, this programme looks at altered environments, puzzles and abstract otherworlds. From the computer-generated galaxies of Bret Battey’s Mercurius, a continual transformation of one synthesised process, to the softer film-based work of Joanna Vaude (Exploration), ‘Unfamiliar Countries, Impossible Structures’ takes in animation and treated live-action film alongside formal artists’ film and found-footage work, such as Volker Schreiner’s Radar, a formal typology which describes an unsettling, uncertain trip into the gloom of a hundred forgotten scenes; and the altogether more opaque and mysterious environment of Sylvia Schedelbauer’s remarkable Falsche Freunde.
This programme originally screened as part of the film competition for AURORA in 2007, a unique festival based in Norwich, UK which focuses on the manipulated moving image via film programmes, discussion events, live performance, installation work and an extensive film competition. AURORA 2008 takes place from 12 - 15 November: to find out more about the festival and for details on how to submit, go to: www.aurora.org.uk
