October – December 2015
Artist Ville Haimala is our resident at Lighthouse Studio for three months from October.
The first of two international artists, Ville Haimala joins us as part of a residency devised in partnership with The Finnish Institute in London and HIAP, the Helsinki International Artist Programme, to create international opportunities for four Finnish artists.
“All the four artists [Ville Haimala, Essi Kausalainen, Kimmo Modig and Hanna Husberg] are working in a wonderfully open-minded and border-crossing way,” says Pauliina Ståhlberg, the director of the Finnish Institute in London. “The Institute has found residency programmes an invaluable way for artists to develop their practice and gain wider international networks. We trust residencies greatly benefit the Finnish art scene as a whole.”
Ville now lives in Berlin, where he co-runs the record label Black Ocean with fellow Finnish artist Martti Kalliala, releasing music by various Berlin-based emerging artists including M.E.S.H, DJ Richard and Soda Plains. Since 2012, he has been focusing on more experimental work, contributing to Amnesia Scanner and other projects.
Currently, Ville is working on two commissioned compositions (to be announced). Recent performances include ones at MoMA PS1 in New York, Haus Der Elektronischen Kunst in Basel during Art Basel, and Newman Festival in Vilnius.
Of his residency, Haimala says: “At Lighthouse I want to focus my research on two things and eventually combine them into one sound piece. I want to study the (experience of the) future of hearing and the (soundscape of the) future of work.”
“The music is alien and new, sounding like water swishing in mouths, glass shattering, metal against metal.” – Adam Devlin, Tiny Mix Tapes on Amnesia Scanner’s Angels Rig Hook
Ville is curating and hosting our Progress Bar event – a monthly night of insight into the creative practice of contemporary culture’s most exciting names – in November.
