The work of freelance writer and artist Leila Johnston, often playful and comedic, is described by The Guardian as “walking a razor-edge line between art and commerce, integrity and realism, and criticality and whimsy.” In 2014 Leila was resident at Lighthouse Studio for three months, where she developed Hack Circus, a creative collective of artists, scientists, writers and performers, who, they say are “committed to delightful and unsettling effects and experiences.”

For Brighton Digital Festival, Leila brings us How to Live Forever. Like life, it is unpredictable and irresolvable. Participants brave enough to enter the Rejuvenation Tent will experience a bespoke treatment courtesy of M.O.R.T.Y Life Extension Technologies: ‘A Cure for Life’. Prepare to leave the treatment zone reborn, refreshed, and with a renewed sense of gratitude for life.

A darkly comic piece incorporating immersive theatrical effects and creative technology innovations How To Live Forever brings together science, imagination and bracing satire to create an intensely personal experience – one which examines and challenges a hypothetical future that some people believe inevitable, including ‘mind uploading’ – the process of copying content from your brain to a computational device, and the Singularity – a moment in time when artificial intelligence will have exceeded our own.

Behind these imagined futures lies a modern eschatology of science and technology, complete with its rituals and prophets, deep-seated fears, exploitative billionaires, desperate hopes, and philosophical conundrums. An interactive experience and a specially-created documentary, How To Live Forever provides a space to really consider this future, while bringing participants into a firm confrontation with the realities of the present.
