After the writer and theologian John Hull became completely blind in 1983, he kept a diary, on audio-cassette, in order to try to make sense of the experience.

His recordings have been incorporated into the film Notes on Blindness, directed by Peter Middleton and James Spinney, which followed the filmmakers’ Emmy award-winning short of the same name. The film has drawn many five star reviews, including from The Guardian and The Times, and has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was recently nominated for six British Independent Film Awards, including Best British Film and Best Director.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with directors Peter Middleton and James Spinney, who will discuss their approach to accessible filmmaking and creating cinematic experiences for visually impaired audiences. Attendees will also have the opportunity to try the VR experience for themselves.

The complementary VR experience, Notes on Blindness: Into Darkness, is a six-part interactive non-fiction project, which uses new forms of storytelling, gameplay mechanics and virtual reality to offer a sensory and psychological journey into “a world beyond sight”. The project has garnered widespread critical acclaim, premiering as part of the New Frontier strand at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, and gone on to win a number of prestigious awards.
