THE SOUND OF STORY: AKIHA DEN DEN
AN EXPLORATION OF SOUND AND MUSIC IN STORYTELLING
18 NOVEMBER 2016
PART OF BRIGHTON'S CINECITY FILM FESTIVAL
Audio drama series Akiha Den Den will be presented as a case study by Neil Cargill and Simon James.
A mysterious voice is picked up by a radio ham, Mr. Cuttings. It’s the voice of a girl trapped in an abandoned amusement park she calls Akiha Den Den.Drawn ever deeper into her turbulent world, Cuttings realises there’s a whole community in there whose words and music become woven into a mesmerising plea for help.
A six-part audio-drama series from writer/director Neil Cargill and musician/sound designer Simon James, Akiha Den Den has been described as ‘radio drama meets audio art meets waking dream’. The series features an original score and a sound that Simon describes as “otherworldly, sometimes trippy and usually very dark”. At The Sound of Story, Neil and Simon will talk us through their creative process in producing this unique series, and the importance of sound in telling compelling stories.
Neil is a writer and director and has created many innovative music, drama, comedy and feature programmes for BBC Radio. His approach to broadcast sound covers a wide spectrum – from the quiet intimacy of Ivor Cutler for Radio 3 to the multi-layered fusion of voices and music in Emotion Pictures, a drama series based on Wim Wenders’ student diaries featuring the only radio appearance of Dennis Hopper.
Simon has been experimenting with sound for over 20 years, working with music, radio and sound design. He uses found sounds, archive material and electronic sources to create multi-layered collages and his experience has resulted in invitations to perform at the BFI and Royal Festival Hall. His sound design, sound engineering and music have featured on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 4, BBC 6 Music and ABC (Australia).
