AN EXPLORATION OF SOUND AND MUSIC IN STORYTELLING
In 2014, Lighthouse presented the first edition of The Sound of Story: two stimulating days of talks, masterclasses and workshops featuring a stellar line-up of world-class sound professionals. Showcasing critically acclaimed and innovative projects, the event is aimed at filmmakers, sound practitioners, music producers and film lovers.

BARNABY SMYTH – The Art of Foley

Barnaby Smyth discusses the art of foley, the unseen and overlooked hero of film and television storytelling. He performs a fascinating live foley demonstration, using materials including celery, gravel, chains and overcooked pasta, accompanied by a background soundtrack, to create a rich auditory narrative. Barnaby describes the foley effects he has created for films including Closed Circuit, Hyde Park and Hudson, Downton Abbey and Jane Eyre, and explains how he uses this aspect of sound production to enrich the soundtrack and bring the film to life.
ROLY PORTER – Case study of the Gandahar Live Score

Roly Porter shares insight into his process and artistic practice as an electronic musician and producer and his progression to creating film scores. He provides a fascinating case study, introducing and exploring his work and the inspiration behind his live re-score of Rene Laloux’s 1982 animation Gandahar, commissioned by the BFI. Roly’s talk is concluded with a Q&A and conversation with Lighthouse’s artistic director Juha Van ’t Zelfde.
JOCELYN POOK – Music and the Soundtrack

Jocelyn Pook shares her journey to becoming a leading composer for film, television, theatre and dance, from performing in orchestras as a child to collaborating with John Smith and Stanley Kubrick. She describes and demonstrates the processes and inspiration behind a number of projects she has worked on, from experimental works such as Blight and Where Are We Going to Eyes Wide Shut and Gangs of New York.
Sound and Graphic Designer

Stephen Dobbie speaks about his work with Punchdrunk, an arts and storytelling organisation specialising in large scale art installation, immersive theatre and performance. He shares stories, sounds and technical details from The Drowned Man and other work they have exhibited over recent years, including The Tempest, Sleep No More and Chair.
Sound Supervisor and Editor
Selected Credits: Avatar / Super 8 / The Simpsons Movie
Anna Bertmark joins sound supervisor and editor Stuart McCowan in conversation. Together they discuss how he entered the world of film and sound, his experience of working at George Lucas’ state-of-the-art Skywalker Sound and designing sound for film and television, including Avatar, Jurassic Park and his Emmy award-winning work on Sherlock.
