10 March 2012

A day of inspirational talks, performances and films from around the globe.

TEDxObserver is an independently organized event licensed by TED. Lighthouse is delighted to be hosting a simulcast of this exciting event, together with a programme of live talks. Jay Rayner, Observer food critic, broadcaster and novelist, will be at Lighthouse to host this stimulating event, which will include talks and performances from anthropologists, actors, neuroscientists, choreographers, environmentalists, artists and more.

Speakers and performers will be streamed live from Sadlers Wells throughout the day, and will include musicians and storytellers Amadou & Mariam, political evangelist and digital radical Rick Falkvinge, Chilean student leader and communist Camilla Valejo, and musician, actor and writer-director Plan B.

The programme will feature an eclectic range of issues, from the neurological difference between optimists and pessimists, to how dance can improve our memory. The event will be an opportunity to hear from people who are thinking and acting their way through new challenges – environmental, cultural, psychological and political.

The following guest speakers will be joining Jay Rayner live at Lighthouse

Matt Adams is a founding member of Blast Theory, who are renowned internationally as one of the most adventurous artists’ groups using interactive media today. Adams will be in conversation with Lighthouse director Honor Harger.

Zahaan Bharmal, one time policy adviser to the Cabinet Office, now Google’s head of marketing in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Bharmal’s great love is space, and he will join us at Lighthouse to talk about his big idea: YouTube’s Space Lab.

Stephen Harris is one of the most exciting chefs working in Britain today. Harris, the Michelin starred chef-patron of the Sportsman in Seasalter will be in conversation with Jay Rayner. With no formal training, Harris simply had a passion to use fresh local produce in exciting new ways.

William Nicholson, celebrated screenwriter, playwright and novelist, is known for his work on the big screen, and has written the highly successful films Gladiator, Elizabeth: the Golden Age, Shadowlands, Nell and First Knight. Nicholson will discuss his work with Jason Wood, film consultant, producer and writer.

The event will be followed by a drinks reception at Lighthouse, from 6pm-7.30pm. Toby Amies, photographer, broadcaster and filmmaker, takes us into the evening with a sublime DJ set.
