SHORT CIRCUIT - WHEN DIGITAL AND DISABILITY COLLIDE

BRIGHTON DIGITAL FESTIVAL 2013

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN DIGITAL AND DISABILITY COLLIDE - SHORT CIRCUIT!

What might happen if the internet had psychosis? What does a deaf city trail sound like? What does deaf contemporary dance look like through the deconstruction of movement and sound? Short Circuit looked at what happens when disability and digital collide, and tapped into the digitised experience of impairment.

Short Circuit is a strategic action research project commissioned by Arts Council England, South East and led by disabled artists & digital curators Sarah Pickthall and Jo Verrent who last year brought you Push Me for The Space, working with Watershed and BDH in Bristol.

Hatched at Mozilla London sautéed at Lighthouse and hosted and served up for your delectation at Brighton Digital Festival 2013 Short Circuit presented:

The Internet has Crashed (Dolly Sen) Dolly Sen explored what it would be like if the internet experienced psychosis; If it heard voices or thought it was Jesus.

D x D (Chisato Minamimura) Deaf choreographer Chisato Minamimura can’t hear the music she choreographs to but working with animator Dave Packer maps the maths and visualises new choreographic form.

Souvenir of a city (Caroline Ward) Deaf artist, Caroline Ward has been developing the concept of an audio-visual souvenir of a city – sonifying locations through walking, imagery and imagining the linked sound memories. Working with artist Anya Ustaszewski and Dave Mee of Madlabs.

Stalking the Book of Mozilla (Jon Adams) Jon Adams plays with concepts of hidden, buried and obscured in many of his commissions, using his experiences of Aspergers and dyslexia as a positive starting point. Through Short Circuit, he spent time at Mozillia’s base in London this summer, exploring, excavating, and stalking – just like a fox – and creating sound in response.
