MONTHLY TALK - THICKEAR
THURSDAY 5 DECEMBER
TALKS ON DIGITAL ART, CULTURE AND FILM ON THE FIRST THURSDAY OF THE MONTH
Step behind the scenes and get a glimpse of the thinking motivating the digital world's greatest artists, filmmakers, thinkers and doers with the Lighthouse Monthly Talks. In December, artist collective, thickear, were our monthly speakers.
We were delighted to present a talk by artists thickear – a collective comprising Andy Davidson, Geoff Howse, Jack James, Kevin Logan, and Tadeo Sendon, who explore contemporary themes through conceptual art and performance.
In their talk at Lighthouse, thickear discussed their ethos, the progression of their work and current research into the ethics of data.
Originally interested in working purely within the medium of sound, thickear have expanded their practice to include visual art and performance. Their recent work has been concerned with the ethics of data, a topic which is also one of the key considerations during the prototyping phase of Lighthouse’s new studio.
thickear’s 2013 work, The Ministry of Measurement, was one of the highlights of the exhibition and showcase, Hack the Barbican, which took place in London’s iconic cultural centre this August. The Ministry of Measurement was an epic exploration of data ethics, presented as a vast cinematic, dystopian data collection centre inside the brutalist interior of the Barbican Centre. It was later reconceived as a small, approachable data exchange stand at the ICT and Art Connect conference in Lithuania.
Formed at the beginning of 2012, thickear have presented exhibitions and performances at the L.C.C, Arbeit Gallery, Troyganic, Music Tech Fest, the Barbican and ICT and Art Connect 2013.
