Avoiding digital feudalism (or, paving the road to indie data with experience‐driven open technologies).

A lot has changed since the days when computers filled entire rooms and generally kept themselves to themselves. Today, we carry our devices with us, wear them, and even implant them in our bodies. We are cyborgs. Today, our devices know a great amount about both the world around them and about us. We live at a time when we both experience and manipulate the world around us through our devices. At such a time, it is essential that we own, not rent these tools. And we must own not just the tools themselves but our data that is gathered, manipulated, analysed, and shared by these tools. No less than our fundamental civil liberties, privacy, and human rights are at stake if we do not.

In this talk, Aral Balkan showed us how we must bring experience design to lead the development of open technologies and avoid a future where our only option is to live as digital serfs in a digital feudalism. The topics introduced included Indie Data and Experience‐driven Open Technology.

Aral Balkan is an experience designer working to change the world by bringing experience design to open technologies and spearhead a category to technology he calls Experience‐driven Open (XO). His latest project, Prometheus, is an ambitious Indie Data initiative to build a beautiful new mobile platform and a phone that empowers regular people to own their own data. He is an award‐winning speaker, the technologist in residence at Lighthouse, and a board member of CodeClub.

Date: Thursday 7 November 2013

Times: 6.30pm doors and bar, 7pm talk started.

Venue: Lighthouse, 28 Kensington Street, Brighton, BN1 4AJ
