THE CHANGING SPACE OF UK CLUB CULTURE
ELIJAH ON LAST DANCE – THE EVENTS, EXPERIENCES & PEOPLE
In this series, Elijah documents his experience as an Artistic Director and Change Maker leading Lighthouse's major, nationwide, Last Dance programme – a timely and urgent investigation into the rapid changes affecting UK club culture, and the impact of those changes on music and youth culture.
In his first blog, Elijah details his journey to becoming a Change Maker and Associate Artistic Director at Lighthouse, and explains why the Last Dance programme is so important to him. Having traced a path from DIY creative to becoming an international Grime DJ and the co-founder of Grime Label Butterz, he now wants “to engage with a new wave of talent”, to inspire and enable them, and aims to provide the same opportunities that he had for creative development, at a time when places to practise and perform finished work are in rapid decline.
Brighton’s DIY Creatives Making a Scene
Lighthouse’s Jamila Prowse talks to Normanton Street about starting out as an independent band, running their own record label, QM Records, and why it’s important to nurture upcoming young talent.
NEXT UP: In his next post, Elijah will focus on the key events of the Last Dance programme and provide further insight into the challenges and rewards of spending half of his time in music and half of it within an arts organisation.
