FILMS, TALKS & VINYL PRESENTATION
29 June 2017
AN EXPLORATION OF RACE, IDENTITY AND GLOBALISATION
Artists Larry Achiampong and David Blandy present Finding Fanon – a moving exploration of race, identity and globalisation inspired by the psychiatrist and anti-colonial radical Frantz Fanon.
Join us for the launch of the double LP of music from the series, Finding Fanon Sequence, and screenings of all three Finding Fanon films, followed by conversation between the artists and Lighthouse Associate Artistic Director, Elijah.
“Achiampong and Blandy’s influences for Finding Fanon are vast: from global politics and sociology to hip-hop music, science fiction, comics, and trash TV." – Hyperallergic.com
SCREENINGS: FINDING FANON TRILOGY
In the film trilogy, Achiampong and Blandy examine the politics of race, racism and decolonisation, and how these issues affect their relationship to each other. Their conflict is played out through scripts that meld found texts and personal testimony. Navigating hidden and traumatic stories that connect the past, present and future, Finding Fanon questions the promise of globalisation, becoming a search for authenticity in a radically interconnected yet ambiguous world.

VINYL PROJECT: FINDING FANON SEQUENCE
Larry Achiampong has been working with audio for the past ten years, and has produced three vinyl records that traverse the art gallery, online, archival and domestic contexts using originally built scores, sampled audio and field recordings.
In Finding Fanon Sequence Achiampong and Blandy have collected a number of the collaborative synth-based compositions from the Finding Fanon films, interspersed with segments of the narrative, creating an audio version of the Finding Fanon series. This is being launched at Lighthouse as a 300 limited-edition run gatefold double LP, pressed as a two-tone black and white vinyl.
The recording will be played, and available to purchase for £20, at the event.
TALKS WITH THE CREATORS
After each screening, Lighthouse Associate Artistic Director Elijah will join the artists to discuss their creative partnership, their use of technology – Finding Fanon Part Two was made entirely within the Grand Theft Auto videogame engine – and how the work relates to the current political landscape.
