Create your own space odyssey identity and learn about drawing in Manga comic book style.
An opportunity to work with Odysseys exhibition artist David Blandy and his Manga artist collaborator Inko on a crash course in Manga style drawing and comic book story techniques.
Exploring storytelling and character development participants will design their own comic book story, turning personal identity into a space odyssey. Participants will receive guidance on how to design and draw an exaggerated self-portrait that would fit into the style of Manga (Japanese comic book illustration), with the assistance of professional Manga artist Inko.
The workshop is inspired by Blandy’s exhibition Odysseys exhibition at Phoenix Brighton, which explores comic book culture and identity.
All drawing materials will be included as part of the workshop. Please bring your own notebook to make notes.
David Blandy lives and works in Brighton, using video, performance and comics to address identity formation and its relationship to popular culture. He has exhibited at venues such as The Baltic, Gateshead; The Bluecoat as part of the 2008 Liverpool Biennial; Turner Contemporary, Margate; Spike Island, Bristol; and Platform China Project Space, Beijing. His work is distributed by LUX, and he is represented by Seventeen Gallery in London.
Inko was born in Kyoto, Japan, she grew up with Manga comics, loving both reading and drawing them. After graduating from Kyoto University of Art & Design, she moved to England and studied at Central Saint Martin’s college of Art & Design. She has been working as a Manga artist delivering Manga workshops in schools, galleries, museums and libraries, around the UK. Such as the British Library and Victoria and Albert Museum. Her Manga appears on Manga Cupcakes (ITCH Anthology) MangaQuake (FutureQuake Press), Howl! (Milk The Cat Comix), plus many more Manga anthology comics.
