CINECITY returned with a packed line-up of screenings, talks and special events including a film set installation for an imaginary screen version of BERG, the debut novel by Ann Quin, created by artist/production designer Anna Deamer with sound design from renowned musician and composer Barry Adamson.

Lighthouse was delighted to take part again in the festival with a varied series of events. From networking opportunities to hands-on workshops, exclusive preview screenings and talks by world-class industry figures, Lighthouse’s CINECITY programme celebrated all aspects of cinema, and offered a wealth of information and inspiration for filmmakers and film-lovers.

27 & 28 November: Film Hub South East Members’ Events & Screening Days
Over two days, Film Hub South East offered screening, networking and information opportunities for individuals and professionals involved in film exhibition, education, curation and archiving. Run in partnership with the Independent Cinema Office, there was also a special Screening Days event for exhibitors based in the region, offering the opportunity to watch previews of new films months before their cinema release. Film Hub South East is managed by a consortium of partners that includes University of Brighton, Lighthouse, Picturehouse Cinemas, Cinecity and Screen Archive South East, with support from Brighton & Hove City.

29 November: Crossover Labs – Interactive Filmmaking Workshop
This workshop focused on new ways of telling stories, and is one in a series of events Crossover Labs is holding across England to develop the emerging field of interactive storytelling. During the hands-on session documentary filmmakers had the opportunity to work with interactive media specialists on exercises and learn from existing case studies. Presented by Crossover Labs with Sheffield Doc/Fest and support from Creative England, hosted in association with Lighthouse.

5 & 6 December: The Sound of Story – conference & workshops
Supported by Creative Skillset, Lighthouse presented an exciting two-day event made up of workshops, talks, case-studies and screenings that explored the role of sound in the storytelling toolkit. Showcasing innovative projects and exploring the working methods of leaders in the field, we looked at how to solve visual storytelling problems with sound; music and the soundtrack; evoking emotion and creating atmosphere; the process of developing ideas and writing sound into projects from script stage. The first day was a series of talks, case-studies, discussions and masterclasses, with linked hands-on workshops taking place during the second day.
