BUILD YOUR OWN SERPENTINE PAVILION
YOUNG ARCHITECTS COMPETITION
3 OCTOBER 2015
RELEASE YOUR INNER ARCHITECT AT LIGHTHOUSE
Lighthouse is proud to be partnered with the Serpentine Gallery in London to celebrate 15 years of innovative, experimental and ambitious architectural designs realised through its Pavilion project, which has commissioned some of today’s most renowned architects to build their first structure in England – a temporary Pavilion on the Serpentine’s lawn in London’s Kensington Gardens.
To celebrate the Pavilion series, the Serpentine has launched Build Your Own Pavilion: Young Architects Competition. As part of the project, a series of workshops will be run across the country, giving budding young architects, aged 8–14, a fantastic opportunity to design a small-scale model of a temporary summer Pavilion, using both technology and raw materials. And on Saturday 3 October 2015, Lighthouse will be hosting the Brighton session.
Run by KIDESIGN, an educational agency that uses creative games and workshops to develop young people’s constructive thinking and design engineering skills, the three-hour session will introduce 3D printing and design through a series of hands-on exercises.
Participants will learn how to use digital modeling programme 3D CAD, and work with a variety of household materials including wood, paper, plasticine, cork, felt and foam to realise their own unique Pavilion.
Like previous architects of the Serpentine Pavilion – Smiljan Radić’s 2014 design was likened to a spaceship resting on Neolithic stones, while in 2015 the Spanish architects studio selgascano created a “polygonal structure consisting of panels of a translucent, multi-coloured fluorine-based polymer,” influenced by the ways in which people move through London – workshop participants are free to draw inspiration from anything they choose and are encouraged to let their imaginations flow.
Selected designs will be showcased on the Build Your Own Pavilion: Young Architect Challenge website and in the media. And there are prizes to be won, too. All national entries will be divided into two categories, 8-10 years and 11-14 years, with a winner and runner-up selected for each category. Each winner will receive an iPad pre-loaded with 3D CAD drawing software and each runner-up will be awarded an architecture toolkit packed with books and creative materials.
