Brighton Photo Biennial 2014: events coming up at Lighthouse in October

Brighton Photo Biennial is back for a sixth year with an inspiring programme exploring the theme of Communities, Collectives and Collaborations. Lighthouse is pleased to be hosting three events in the programme.

On October 7, John Fleetwood will discuss the remarkable work of Market Photo Workshop. Founded in 1989 by world-famous photographer David Goldblatt, Market Photo Workshop plays a pivotal role in the training and development of South African photographers, ensuring that visual literacy reaches the marginalised parts of society. John, the current head of the organisation (and also the co-commissioner of A Return to Elsewhere) will explore the organisation’s incredible 25-year history and legacy.

On October 21, we welcome Simon Faithfull, creator of REEF, who will share stories of scientific curiosities, myths and legends of the deep and the strange politics of the ocean floor, accompanied by live footage relayed from the wreck of the Brioney Victoria, currently submerged off the coast of Portland, UK.

We are also pleased to host Family Fakes, on October 22. Supported by photography, film and animation artists from Photoworks and Lighthouse, students from Brighton and Portslade Aldridge community academies have created a variety of digital artworks based on the notion of a fantasy family portrait. The day includes activities from 11am – 3pm when families are invited to make their own family portrait to take away.

Produced by Photoworks, Brighton Photo Biennial is the UK’s largest international photography festival and takes place throughout October both online and in public spaces, galleries and pop-up venues in Brighton and beyond. It features more than 45 photographers and collaborators united by a fresh approach and novel perspective on the world.
