Lighthouse is pleased to be supporting one of Brighton’s liveliest digital events this september: Brighton Mini Maker Faire and we also have a special deal for friends of Lighthouse; read on for details.

We helped kickstart the event in its first year as a community event in 2011. Now in its 4th year, it’s grown to become a key fixture in the UK maker community calendar, attracting over 3,000 visitors to the Corn Exchange for a one day celebration of grassroots innovation, DIY technology, craft, art, science and design.

It’s also a highlight of Brighton Digital Festival, making for a great end to the first week of world-class events, including our own Improving Reality and Clearleft’s dConstruct conference.

We’re especially pleased to be supporting this year, as the event continues to work with younger people to help them learn to manipulate technology, whether that be through coding, digital fabrication, or physical computing. This year, there will be two appearances from Art at Work, a two-year arts education programme for students at the Brighton & Portslade Aldridge Community Academies we’re delivering in partnership with the Aldridge Foundation and Photoworks.

Art at Work students will be showcasing Lego Mindstorms robots, and the Curiosity Hub will also be running 1-hour, mini-workshops featuring Lego WeDo Robotics, suitable for ages 7+. Children will use Lego Education WeDo robotics kits to assemble a ‘Hungry Alligator’ robot, then learn to create a simple programme using a visual, drag-and-drop interface on a computer to make it snap its jaws and play sounds.
