Board


Our Board of Trustees is a voluntary body which has legal responsibility for the overall governance and management of Lighthouse. Its members bring a wide range of skills and knowledge to the organisation.

CHAIR: Mark Segal (appointed December 2004)

Mark is the Director of ArtSway in the New Forest. ArtSway presents a high quality changing exhibition programme of contemporary visual art. In addition it hosts artists in residence and offers professional development and production facilities for artists and creative opportunities for audiences through a wide range of workshops and courses.

Peter Cornforth (appointed December 2004)

Peter is an experienced business professional and a director of Eaton House Investments, a property investment and development company. He holds a degree in Estate Management and is a chartered surveyor. He has had a long and varied career as a Trustee in the voluntary sector, including vice-chair of the National Autistic Society and chair of an NHS mental health Trust. He is currently a Board member of The Inge Wakehurst Trust and Community Housing Association. He is a member of the ICA and the Royal Institution.

Melanie Davis BSc (Econ) (appointed February 2004)

Melanie has spent over 20 years in broadcast TV, producing, filming and writing educational programmes for Channel 4, ITV and the US History Channel. Five previous years were spent as a researcher in the House of Commons (including Arts Policy) and as Women’s UK Press Officer for the European Commission. Fifteen years at Yorkshire TV included making broadcast programmes and multi media support materials for adult learners, managers, schools, and museums. She is a Judge for the Royal Television Society (multimedia and interactive educational TV). She has extensive knowledge of multimedia production and of team and team building skills needed to help create and manage an effective and vibrant arts organisation. She is committed to generating and supporting exciting and successful arts and media talent and projects in Brighton. Melanie is a Justice of the Peace for Brighton.

Nigel F. Hawes FRICS, MAPM, MaPS (appointed December 2004)

Nigel is a Chartered Surveyor with a national company based in Hove. He trained and practiced as guaranty surveyor for 40 years with specialities in Project Management and Project Safety. He has not previously been involved in trusteeship, however he has been involved as an Equality Partner in a professional practice and has run his own business. He also has, through his family, an interest in art drama and filmmaking and believes implicitly in interaction between the Arts and Business worlds.

Maeve O’Brien (appointed January 2005)

Maeve is a lecturer and convenor of the Arts and Cultural Management Masters Degree programme at the University of Sussex. She joined Sussex after 2 years of pioneering higher education outreach work with the Centre for Creative Enterprise & Participation, Dartington College of Arts (Devon). Working through the field of arts and cultural management Maeve has devised, promoted and executed projects that link higher education to the creative industries and provided support to creative businesses across the south west of England. Her work in higher education is informed by 14 years of experience in a diverse range of arts organisations and her ongoing consultancy and research practice. Maeve holds a Masters Degree in Museum & Gallery Management and her research interests include governance, leadership, professional development and the dynamics of culture sector organisational structures.

Ken Smith (appointed June 2004)

Ken is a financially orientated senior executive with 7 years UK FTSE (250) main board experience, a founder director and divisional MD of UK airline with £500 million turnover. He is former President of an international airline association based in Brussels now with non-executive and consultancy roles within the aviation sector. He is a member of the Arts and Business Board Bank and Mentoring Scheme. Ken is completing his doctoral research in strategic management as part of a DBA at Kingston Business School and has a passionate interest in the contribution of the Arts to the development of strategic exploration within companies.
