Wearable Technology Residency : Rachel Beth Egenhoefer

Wearable Technology Residency: For this commission we worked with a number of partners including SCAN, the University of Brighton, Furtherfield, Textile Futures Research Group and the University of Wales, to provide support to San Francisco based textile designer and media artist Rachel Beth Egenhoefer as part of the Distributed South partnership initiative.
The residency enabled Rachel Beth to create new work and took place at Lighthouse and at the University of Brighton. Her work tracked the motion of knitting needles in both physical and virtual space, playing with the Wii, and investigating representations of motion in body/machine interaction. Additional works explored the space between body and machine as a place for architectural design.
Rachel Beth considers her Commodore 64 Computer and Fischer Price Loom to be defining objects of her childhood. She creates tactile representations of cyclical data structures in candy and knitting and is currently researching the intersection of textiles, technology, and the body in contemporary media studies.
