GUIDING LIGHTS
On 1st March 2006, Lighthouse and Skillset launched Guiding Lights at the Soho Hotel in London, where leading figures from the British Film Industry gathered for a glittering champagne reception.

Guiding Lights is a year-long mentoring programme in which 26 up-and-coming film professionals have been matched with established practitioners who will provide mentor advice and support throughout the programme and beyond.

The scheme is supported by an advisory steering group chaired by producer Tim Bevan, Co-Chairman of Working Title Films. The other steering group members are producer Marc Boothe (Bullet Boy), Judy Counihan (Director of Film at Skillset, talent agent Natasha Galloway (PFD), producer Nadine Marsh-Edwards (Bhaji on the Beach), Cameron McCracken (Managing Director of Pathe), director Shane Meadows (Dead Man's Shoes), mentoring consultant Bertie Ross (BHR Consulting & Associates) and writer Shawn Slovo (Captain Corelli's Mandolin).

Tim Bevan said, “Training in film is very difficult as most skills used in the movie business from producer to production runner are learnt on the job. This is why the concept of mentoring is such a good one for our industry. Having a formal bond where someone learning about their chosen career in the industry can have ongoing advice from someone with great experience should be invaluable and help in the demystifying of all of our roles.”

Writer Deborah Moggach is one of the Mentors: "Skillset and Lighthouse are bringing together the new and the experienced through Guiding Lights and both sides have a great deal to learn. Mentoring is not a one-way activity, after all, if a writer is any good, they're learning something every single day."

Guiding Lights is the first major mentoring scheme in the UK designed to identify and support emerging film industry talent. The scheme is part of A Bigger Future, the UK Film Skills Strategy, a joint project between Skillset and the UK Film Council to address skills development across all jobs in the British film industry.

Lighthouse and Skillset are very grateful for the support of our sponsors, Pathe, BAFTA, Screen International, the Soho Hotel who provided the wonderful venue for the reception and Mayfair Cellars, who provided the excellent champagne.
