Our web finds this week: pop-up learning, society reimagined and fully automated luxury communism. By Lighthouse Artistic Director Juha van 't Zelfde.
Amsterdam Public Library is creating pop-up libraries for refugee centres in Amsterdam, and asks citizens to donate books and “write personal notes to the readers”. I love libraries and thank my mother every day for taking me to one so often when I was young.

ROJAVA: REIMAGINE SOCIETY
“Rojava is an autonomous region in north Syria. The region gained its autonomy in November 2013 in the process of the Syrian uprising, establishing a society based on principles of direct democracy, gender equity, and sustainability.”
After Occupy Wall Street and Anonymous, after Podemos and Syriza, and after Bitcoin and the blockchain, Rojava Plan feels like another interesting rendition of networked attempts to reimagine society, democracy and capitalism.
A SYRIAN LOVE STORY
Finally saw the beautiful and very moving A Syrian Love Story. Went with a friend whose family had fled their country more than 30 years ago, and saw him recognise the entire experience. Go and see it if you have the chance. It tells the story of war, political atrocities and personal hardship in a very intimate way.
A SYRIAN LOVE STORY: Q&A
Amer Daoud, the protagonist of A Syrian Love Story, was present at the screening at IDFA (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam), alongside the film’s producer Elhum Shakerifar, a former Guiding Lights mentee, and director Sean McCalister.
RED LIGHT RADIO 5TH ANNIVERSARY
Happy 5th anniversary Red Light Radio! One of the best radio stations on the internet.
Saw a performance by Dutch hip hop icon Sticks in an old garage in Amsterdam and captured this 8 Mile vibe.
INVENTING THE FUTURE
After Paul Mason’s PostCapitalism: A Guide to Our Future I am now reading Inventing the Future by Nick Srnicek and Alex Williams. This list takes you down the rabbit hole of their sources, all the way down to fully automated luxury communism.
Love this FKA Twigs performance, and that of the dancers, earlier this month at the MOBO Awards.
ARCA’S WARPED BEAUTY
“I was blown the fuck away. They were playing, like, slowed down hardstyle with a Rihanna a capella over it.” Great interview with Arca in Pitchfork.
My song of the year, from the artist of the year.
