In this week's edition, Artistic Director Juha van 't Zelfde takes a look at cutting-edge games, Amnesia Scanner's laterst video, created with the Unreal gaming engine and an Oculus Rift, Amnesty International's hologram 'ghost protest', and more.

TURNING INWARD
Currently thinking a lot about creative work: the interface through which it can be experienced, the platform it lives on, and the networks it can be distributed on. This book deals with the “production, consumption and distribution” of contemporary art, and, four chapters in, has been a good read so far.

WHERE LAND MEETS SEA
Haunting work from Embassy for the Displaced, with music from Helm.

KRILLBITE STUDIO: MOSAIC
Look out for this great-looking game, coming out in 2017. Whereas Krillbite’s Among The Sleep focused on childhood trauma, Mosiac will focus on the blandness and alienation of adulthood.

KEYS TO THE DRONE
WT… This is exactly the kind of technology that hits the sweet spot of awe and dread: it sounds kind of incredible, but, much more than that, is also incredibly eerie.

VIDEOGAMES AND SPATIAL STORYTELLING
“If interactive experiences like Gone Home and Sleep No More, both of which defy their genre expectations (Is it a play or a game? Is it a game or a film?), have anything to teach us, it’s that we can very much rely on audiences to fit pieces of the puzzle together, and even to come up with their own, uniquely shaped pieces to fill in the holes. The world of gaming can very much embrace that the “magic circle” can be defined both by the creators as well as the players.”

I am very interested in these kind of games, such as Firewatch and Everybody’s Gone To The Rapture, and hope we can get more involved in this field.

GHOST PROTEST
Ending with another ‘whoa’ moment, but this one staying on the good side of awe.

MAKING A VIRTUAL HUMAN
A new technology that allows the actress Senua to perform a scene live and in real-time directly within the game world.

THE RUNNER ON GO90
The proliferation of high-resolution screens and multi-gb data subscriptions is changing how we watch television and film.

GONE TO THE RAPTURE
The Chinese Room, got ten BAFTAGame nominations for their beautiful game Everybody’s Gone To The Rapture!

GHOST PROTEST
Ending with another ‘whoa’ moment, but this one staying on the good side of awe.
