Lighthouse goes to Galway

25 July 2013

Guiding Lights had a great trip to sunny Galway last week for the excellent Film Fleadh, and took part in a packed schedule of screenings, meetings and intensive networking. The twelve programme participants received a truly Irish welcome from the festival team, who made sure everyone got the most out of their stay. By Sian Habell-Aili.

Highlights included attending the premiere of Lance Daly’s latest feature, Life’s a Breeze, a charming comedy-drama starring Fionnula Flanagan and featuring an outstanding debut from newcomer Kelly Thornton. This was followed by a special Guiding Lights Script-to-Screen session with the film’s director (Lance Daly), producer (Macdara Kelleher), distributor (Patrick O’Neill) and star (Kelly Thornton), which turned out to be extraordinarily insightful, thanks to the incredible openness and generosity of the team in recounting their wisdom and experience to our filmmakers.

Other high points were the festival Market, where the Guiding Lighters were able to engage in one-to-one meetings with leading companies such as Film4, BFI, The Works, BBC Films, Pathé, Studiocanal, Irish Film Board and many more…

Galway also marked a significant milestone for the BFI Shorts scheme, with the first festival premiere taking place following the official selection of SLR. Written and directed by Stephen Fingleton, produced by Matt Wilkinson, and starring Liam Cunningham and Amy Wren, SLR is about a man obsessed with ‘voyeur pornography’, who on discovering that someone is taking pictures of his daughter, decides to take matters into his own hands. The film was very well received, marking a great start to a new phase in the life of the scheme, and we look forward to making further announcements regarding festival premieres and selections over the coming months.
