GUIDING LIGHTS & OSKA BRIGHT FILM FESTIVAL
20 November 2017
In 2016, Becky Bruzas and Matthew Hellett took part in the eighth edition of Lighthouse's Guiding Lights scheme.
As Festival Director and Lead Programmer at Oska Bright, the leading international festival of films made by, or featuring, people with learning disabilities, Becky and Matthew, who both have a learning disability themselves, participated as exhibitors.
In the lead up to Oska Bright Film Festival 2017, which runs from Wednesday 15 to Friday 17 November, Lighthouse has produced three short films (watch them below) to mark Matthew and Becky’s achievements and highlight the issues learning disabled people face working in the film industry.
During their time on the Guiding Lights scheme, each mentee is matched with a leading film industry professional who provides advice and guidance over a nine-month period. Becky was paired with Alice Cabanas (former Director, Encounters Short Film & Animation Festival) and Matthew with Emma Smart (Programmer, BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival).
Lighthouse Executive Director Emily Kyriakides said: “Becky and Matthew’s inclusion on Guiding Lights has been an incredibly positive and important learning experience for Matthew and Becky, for us as an organisation, for their fellow participants on the scheme, and for our industry partners. We want to continue the work we have begun, to carve out and create a legacy to help change public perception of learning disability film exhibition, and support the careers of disabled and learning disabled filmmakers.”
