1. Digiville : Danielle Wilde - Artist talk & panel discussion
Date: Tue 3rd March 2009
6.30pm: Doors and Bar
7.00pm: Artist Talk
Venue: Lighthouse, 28 Kensington Street, Brighton BN1 4AJ
Entry: FREE

Danielle Wilde will present her current research outcomes: a range of interactive concept garments and body extensions that encourage people to explore and move in playful ways. The different interfaces allow the wearer to hear the shape or dynamic of their movements, to dance sound, to draw pictures by moving their hips, to interact with each other with rays of light extending out from their bodies, to navigate through “invisible” vibro-tactile displays, as well as to “try on” another’s deformity or physical limitation, or to change the shape of a garment dynamically through movement.

Through these works, Wilde hopes to understand how to incite people to move and extend themselves physically, while celebrating the idiosyncratic nature of relationships to the body.

Following last year’s critical and popular success, ‘Hunger’ comes back to Brighton for one night only, accompanied by its producer Laura Hastings Smith.

Directed by Turner Prize-winning artist Steve McQueen, ‘Hunger’ is a compelling and visceral portrayal of life within the Maze prison around the time of the 1981 IRA hunger strike. Starring Michael Fassbender and Liam Cunningham, the film was co-written with Enda Walsh.

After its premier at Cannes where it was awarded the Camera d’Or, ‘Hunger’ went on to receive countless prizes and accolades at film festivals around the world.

Watch ‘Hunger’ at Lighthouse and stay for a Q&A with Laura Hastings-Smith who will be discussing the film’s journey, from conception to completion and beyond, with local filmmaker and broadcaster Toby Amies.

This event has been enabled by Screen South and the RIFE lottery funding programme.

Closing Artist Talk: 3.00pm: 28 March 2009
Venue: Lighthouse, 28 Kensington Street, Brighton BN1 4AJ

Why is it that one person can have the ability to ‘light up a room’?
How does a previously upbeat group become miserable?
The CHAMELEON Project merges art, neuroscience and technology into a poetic interactive video art installation driven by emotions of the audience. The work uses mind reading technology to assess and respond to the emotional states of the audience. As members of the public enter the exhibition space, cameras will read their facial expressions and the video installations will respond accordingly.
If viewers look happy, the video installations will respond with smiling expressions and so forth.

Tina Gonsalves will be resident in the Lighthouse space for two weeks in March 09. During this time she will work with her collaborators and members of the public to develop and improve Chameleon’s mind reading technology. The public will become active participants in the development of the Chameleon Project and will gain a greater insight into how technology-led art works.

This two-week residency and exhibition promises to be unmissable for anyone interested in the collaborative and cross-disciplinary aspects of innovative digital art practice.

Rattling the Cage is a community archive of documents, textiles, photography and film used in the ‘Save Omar’ campaign. It demonstrates the power of improvisation. As a group of people from Brighton, Worthing and Eastbourne began to work together for the return of Guantánamo detainee Omar Deghayes to his home in Saltdean, they developed skills and materials that could be called an art of politics: they wrote letters and plays, performed on the street and for the screen. They created posters, postcards, badges and clothing. The exhibition of their archive is an opportunity to reflect upon how the creativity of local people can be used to effect political change.
The exhibition runs from 7 – 21 March and is accompanied by a programme of talks and activities. For further details please visit www.phoenixbrighton.org.
