1. Artists’ talk - Semiconductor: Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt Thursday 11 June 09
Doors: 6:15pm
Artist Talk: 6:30pm
Venue: Lighthouse, 28 Kensington Street, Brighton BN1 4AJ
Entry: FREE

Semiconductor make moving image works which reveal the physical world in flux; cities in motion, shifting landscapes and systems in chaos. Since 1999 UK artists Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt have worked with digital animation to transcend the constraints of time, scale and natural forces to explore the world beyond human experience, questioning our very existence.

Interested in the possibilities of the computer as an artistic tool they have brought a sculptural approach to each work, exploring both the physicality of the medium and the data as material to reflect on the physical world around them.

More recently they have combined these approaches with ideas of natural philosophy to find a place where science and art meet. Their current research interests explore the process of making sense of the physical world through science, and how this process relates to our actual experience of the perceivable world.

2. In My Shoes - Research Project
In My Shoes is a research project for the development of 'wearable film', screen-based performance that seemingly places the viewer within someone else's body - the performer's. In the next few weeks Sam Pearson and Clara Garcia Fraile (Parachutes and Puzzles) will be in residence at the studios of Blast Theory exploring this illusion of "body swapping" and its poetic, narrative and choreographic potential. The project aims to prompt reflection on the role of the body in our media-inundated world and on how this mediation affects our definition of 'self' and our relation to our surroundings.
Ultimately, In My Shoes investigates a model of audiovisual media where the separation between live and screen, viewing space and showing space, viewer and spectacle is reduced to create a hybrid situation of mixed reality and fiction.

The outcomes of this research will be presented at Lighthouse in an end of residency talk (date tbc.), where prototypes of the work will be piloted. Please visit the project website for more information and leave your comments and feedback in the project blog: www.parachutesandpuzzles.com
If you would like to participate in a testing session, email: info@parachutesandpuzzles.com
