For many filmmakers, knowing and protecting your rights as well as understanding the legal issues involved in properly putting a film together can be daunting, making it tempting instead to focus on the artistic side of filmmaking. But you do so at your peril.

This is an opportunity for screenwriters, directors and producers to get to grips with the main legal issues and contracts that form part of the process of filmmaking, and make sure they cover all of their legal bases.

A Legal Toolkit for Filmmakers will be presented by Leighton Lloyd who qualified as a solicitor in 1999. Leighton is a specialist in film finance and production, particularly international co-productions (by treaty), TV finance and production, and music (publishing and concerts). He is an expert in film tax structures and is active in raising capital to produce films based on equity, tax structures. Leighton has been the lead lawyer for major banks on films such as Hotel Rwanda and The Merchant of Venice (staring Al Pacino), and the lead production lawyer on films such as The Secret of Moonacre (released in cinemas on Feb 6th). Before becoming a lawyer he was a successful independent concert promoter.
