Lighthouse News

1. Guiding Lights Launches Again
Following two successful rounds of Guiding Lights, we are looking for another 25 up-and-coming film professionals to match with top industry talent. Successful applicants will benefit from 12 months of one-to-one mentor support from an established practitioner. Previous mentors include Danny Boyle, Paul Greengrass, Gurinda Chadha, Kenneth Branagh, Alison Owen, Christopher Hampton and Bill Nicholson.

We welcome applications from across the community. The scheme is open to directors, producers, screenwriters, cinematographers and professionals working in sales, distribution, exhibition, marketing, publicity and business affairs.

Application Deadline: 1pm Wednesday 23rd December 2009

Guiding Lights is run by Lighthouse with funding from the Skillset Film Skills Fund, Optimum Releasing and Lighthouse.

2. Multiplatform Training

12-14 March 2010 – Multiplatform: The Creative Opportunity vs. The Production Challenge (Factual)

26-28 March 2010 - Making It Pay: The Business of Multiplatform Media

Lighthouse has teamed up with digital media experts Wired Sussex to develop a series of highly practical weekend courses on various aspects of multiplatform media. Aimed specifically at existing TV and media professionals who want to better understand how to operate successfully in the multiplatform environment, the courses are included on the Skillset TV Freelance Fund’s list of approved multiplatform courses, so interested applicants may be eligible to receive funding of 80% of the costs up to £800 through Skillset’s Bursary Scheme.
Please note that bursary funds are limited so we recommend an early application.

This is an exciting opportunity to take part in an exclusive hands-on workshop led by Passion Pictures director Chris Hemming. Having joined in 1997 when Passion's output was predominately 2D, Chris has been integral in the studio's progression to becoming one of the world's leading 3D/CGI animation houses. His strong animation, CG and graphic design background allowed Chris to move seamlessly into the role of director having previously worked as ‘right hand man’ to Pete Candeland, Tim Hope and Russell Brooke to name but a few. His most recent works include a Shooting People’s Film of the Month short ‘Liver Good Life’ and the beautiful ‘Free Love’ music promo for Cornershop. During the workshop participants will be given a brief and work in teams to develop and pitch the perfect animated ad campaign.

This is a rare opportunity to learn about the realities of the business and pick up some tips directly from a top industry pro. Places are limited so book now to avoid disappointment.

6. Introduction to Screenwriting
10th February - 7th July 2010
Length: 20 sessions (all Wednesdays)

The syllabus for this course was commissioned by the UK Film Council to provide writers with foundation skills in screenwriting. It forms part of an integrated approach to the provision of skills for the audio-visual industries.

Many previous participants have used this course as a stepping stone to other screenwriting and film making pursuits: several have secured funding and gone into production with scripts written on the course, some of which have subsequently been screened locally and at national and international film festivals; others have won a place on MA screenwriting courses; many have gone on to develop feature-length screenplays; and a couple of participants have had scripts short-listed by the Kaos British Short Screenplay Competition.

2. Writers group - Call for interest
Writer Hilary Handel is looking to set up a writers group in the Brighton area. Since attending The Screenwriters Festival in Cheltenham she realised the importance of keeping in contact with other writers, so is looking for other writers to bounce ideas off, help keep focus and meet deadlines with. Ideally the group would meet up once a month and email in-between. Hilary has worked as a Script Editor for four years on TV shows such as Coronation Street, The Bill and for the last five years have been bringing up her son and writing. 6. AIR TIME 09 Brighton - Supporting artists’ practice through information and networking.

This event is open to all visual and applied artists, AIR TIME events are designed to provide information and tips from artists, arts organisations and other experts on professional matters such as insurance, negotiation and funding your practice, alongside opportunities to meet and network with like-minded artists. 7. Job Opportunity - Administrative Assistant, Fabrica
Fabrica is seeking to appoint a full-time (full time until end Dec 2012, 0.5 until end April 2013) Administrative Assistant to support the gallery and its partners in the co-ordination and delivery of a 3-year European cultural exchange and audience development project, Landscapes, Cities, People, funded through the European Union Interreg IVa Two Seas programme. The salary is £16,016 per annum. Working directly to Fabrica’s European Development Manager, the Administrative Assistant will contribute to the monitoring and evaluation of activities, the processing of progress reports and financial claims and provide administrative support for project partner meetings and other activities as required, to ensure the project runs smoothly and efficiently.
