Cineville is pleased to welcome Screen South and the Institute of Development Studies’ Pathways of Women’s Empowerment for the launch of their 2009 Real World documentary programme.

As well as announcing a call-out for a £20,000 commission of a documentary short, the evening will feature screenings of the films produced during the last round of the scheme + Q&As with the films’ directors.

Directed by Kat Mansoor, ‘A Vida Politica’ is a series of creative films exploring the activism of four Brazilian women, as they demonstrate innovative ways of bringing hidden issues into the public domain.

Directed by Paulina Tervo, ‘Thorns and Silk’ tells four unusual stories from Palestine, featuring women who work in jobs more conventionally associated with men. All four of them have the courage to break traditional rules, though not without challenges.

3. Ghosts in the Machine & The Revery Alone - Billy Cowie

Ghosts in the Machine - Premiere of Billy Cowie's latest 3-D film installation
Preview: 01 May 2009, 5-8pm
Exhibition: 02 - 31 May 2009, Wed-Sun, 12-6pm
Venue: Lighthouse, 28 Kensington Street, Brighton BN1 4AJ
Entry: FREE

Billy Cowie’s new 3-D dance installation, Ghosts in the Machine, is shown for the first time in the Lighthouse Gallery during May 09 as part of the HOUSE festival. It combines highly specialised techniques of stereoscopic filmmaking with inventive dance choreography to create an immersive and unique 3-D experience. As you stand in front of a white wall, wearing blue and red 3-D glasses, three cheeky young women emerge, solid as life, coming at you.

Jennifer Potter, Rachel Blackman and Victoria Melody dance, sing and joke their way through the twenty-five minute piece. Their topics of discussion range from existentialism to ballpark sex to media studies (though none of them is quite sure which cowboy film Marshall McLuhan was actually in). Hanging over them is the dread knowledge that at the end of the performance they have to do ‘the whole friggin thing all over again’ but somehow it turns out to be more fun than they thought.

The Revery Alone - 3-D film installation by Billy Cowie
Exhibition: 02 - 31 May 09, Thu-Sun, 12-6pm.
Venue: The Regency Town House, 13 Brunswick Square, Hove, BN3 1EH
Entry: FREE

The Regency Town House will be showing Billy's mesmerising work, The Revery Alone, as part of HOUSE, the Artist Open Houses newly curated visual arts festival. Audiences are invited to lie down on comfortable floor mats to view the installation through red and blue anaglyph glasses.

Lying on the floor, we gazed up at the palely naked, flexing and contorting body of performer Eleonore Ansari. Our 3-D glasses brought her arching back within inches of our faces, confounding reality and replacing it with something mystical, haunting, rare. When she looked down, only once, dark eyes locking with ours, it felt as if she saw us. MARY BRENNAN Glasgow Herald February 17 2009

4. Job Opportunity: Volunteer Invigilators

Working alongside the curatorial team, you will be responsible for welcoming visitors and managing daily exhibition duties. This is a great opportunity for those interested in gaining experience of arts and exhibitions management, as well as understanding how to work with audiences in a gallery setting. In exchange, Lighthouse staff will offer advice around career development where possible, and will offer an opportunity to meet the artist to talk about their work.
