Festival & Market Attendance
Over the years, Guiding Lights has helped participants attend a number of film festivals, such as Edinburgh Film Festival and London Film Festival, enabling them to take advantage of valuable industry events, business meetings and networking opportunities.
Galway Film Fleadh
More recently, Guiding Lights has developed a strong relationship with Galway Film Fleadh, resulting in an annual trip to the festival over the last three rounds of the scheme.
Sat along the waterfront, the Galway Film Fleadh industry programme takes place primarily at the Radisson hotel, where there is a constant stream of filmmakers and industry figures buzzing around. The festival is well attended by leading producers, financiers and distributors from Europe and the US, including companies such as Pathé, Protagonist, BBC Films, BFI Film Fund, Film4, Killer Films, HanWay Films, Studiocanal, Sundance Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival, Altitude and many others.
The trip is designed to give participants access to as much of the festival and its delegates as possible. Travel bursaries and accommodation are provided by the scheme.
Guiding Lights ‘Script to Screen’ Masterclass
Presented in partnership with Galway Film Fleadh, this session offers an exclusive opportunity to hear about the journey, process and challenges around the funding, production and distribution of a specially selected feature film from the Fleadh’s screening programme. Previous masterclasses have been led by the teams behind Life’s a Breeze, Parked and Gold. Offering a warts-and-all insight into the film’s journey, the aim of the masterclass is to dissect the highs and lows experienced by the creative team, with plenty of opportunity for mentees to ask questions, dig deeper and seek advice that will benefit their own projects.
Galway Film Fair
The Galway Film Fair is an umbrella term for the many industry events taking place during the festival, which Guiding Lights mentees are able to attend (we work in partnership with the festival to offer discounted rates to mentees where possible).
Running across two days, the Marketplace offers an opportunity to meet with leading financiers and commissioners in an intimate and informal setting. Open to filmmakers with projects in development and/or a completed film, the Marketplace team co-ordinates pre-scheduled meetings with specially invited Film Financiers, Distributors, Sales Agents, Broadcasters, Film Funds and leading Producers.
The masterclasses are an illuminating opportunity to hear from leading actors, screenwriters, directors and producers. Previous sessions have involved: Stephen Frears, Michael Winterbottom, Julien Temple, Michael Fassbender, Isabelle Huppert, Fionnula Flanagan and Woody Harrelson.
Other Film Fair Events
Each year a range of events are presented, looking at different aspects of the business of film. In the past these have included: The Next Big (Tax) Break Workshop with ACE (Ateliers due Cinema Européen) & Irish Film Board, EAVE workshop – Packaging for the USA, New Business Models: Digital Marketing Strategies and many others.
