TIME SPINNER
Time Spinner is a short film made by 24 ten
and eleven year-olds from Brighton and Hove.
The children, from Somerhill Junior School and Hertford Junior
School, worked together with the BAFTA award-winning writer Roy
Apps to adapt his novel Time Spinner into a screenplay during
an after-school club in the Spring term of 2005.
At the same time the children were taught filmmaking skills by
a range of film industry professionals including directors Laurie
Lynd, (I Was a Rat) and David Bell (Ghosthunter), production designer
Jason Carlin (Yasmin) and script editor David Collier (My Parents
are Aliens).
During the Summer Term, the children cast and shot the film with
professional actors including Linda Robson (Birds of a Feather)
and Kym Marsh of HearSay, as well as local child actors Rhianna
McGreevy and Daniel Gallichan. They also had the support of professional
make-up artist Nikita Rae whose credits include Cold Mountain,
Alexander and Pirates of the Caribbean. Local award-winning director,
Joe Tunmer, oversaw the process providing advice and guidance
to the children during filming.
The film had its premiere at the Duke Of York’s cinema in
Brighton in front of the cast, crew and tutors, as well as all
the Year Six children from Somerhill and Hertford.
The project was funded by First
Light, Lighthouse, Brighton
& Hove City Council and Screen
South.
We will soon have Time Spinner and The Making of Time Spinner
available to view on this site.
