Marie Lidén – Writer/Director

Marie Lidén is a Swedish filmmaker and animator, now based in Scotland. Graduating from Edinburgh College of Art in 2011 with a degree in animation she went on to direct music videos, shorts and animations before focusing on documentaries.

Since then she has built a strong portfolio, working on independent and broadcast commissions – including a BAFTA nominated animation, and documentaries for Channel 4’s First Cut and Al-Jazeera – and sound designing and composing for documentary and drama.

Marie’s background in sound design, animation and music video plays a major role in her work, strongly informing her style. She is intrigued by issues that straddle definition, where mainstream society wants to draw neat lines, she seeks to make work that challenges this rigid thinking and exposes the complexity of human experience.

Currently, Marie is developing two feature documentaries: Electric Malady with Aconite Productions and Girls of Cults with The Forest of Black.

Peter Middleton and James Spinney work across a range of fiction, documentary and cross-platform projects including their feature documentary, Notes on Blindness, which premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for three BAFTAs in 2017. The project was released alongside the groundbreaking virtual reality project Notes on Blindness: Into Darkness, which won the Storyscapes Award at Tribeca Film Festival 2016. They were mentored by Walter Murch on the scheme in 2015.
